As always, I will not be wasting much time to come to the point. I watched ‘Dil Bechara’ just because of the emotions attached to it after the untimely demise of its hero, SSR. I am still obsessed with its original work ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ by Josh Boone, starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, adapted from the novel with the same name by John Green. Even though I am not an ardent fan of the romantic movie genre, this was one of my favorites alongside the likes of Roman Holiday, Casablanca, Bridges of Madison County, A Walk To Remember, etc. So ‘Dil Bechara’ right from the beginning had its own problem, it was not an original work.
Truly speaking, Sushant Singh deserved a better movie than this as his swansong. I am sure this will be minting money riding on the sentiments overflowing after SSR’s death, but had he lived to see the release of this movie, would it have generated this much interest or love? Practically, this movie had no taker to release it in a theater while Sushant was alive. Many of those who refused to even distribute this movie are now shedding crocodile tears after Sushant’s untimely death. Sad, but true. Anne Frank rightly wrote, ” The dead will always receive more flowers than the alive because regret is stronger than gratitude”.
Coming to the review, the direction is hopeless and hapless. The plot in its valiant effort to match its original counterpart becomes cliched, out of date and lackluster. In many scenes it is evident that the director became less interested to complete the work after he was given a clean-chit in the case of “Me Too” accusations against him and certain scenes were hurriedly packed up hampering its flow. Sushant Singh as I have already said deserved a better swan song. Even though he looks charming with his cherubic smile, after ten minutes or so that becomes monotonous and apart from some stiff and hackneyed expressions, his performance does not rise above the bar. I was vehemently hoping to get the glimpses of his skills from his MSD or Kai Po Che days, but sadly my wishes were not granted. Sanjana Sanghi looked plastic throughout and it looks like she may not bag some new roles even after the super success of this movie. So, from a neutral point of view, ‘Dil Bechara’ is a sheer disappointment. If you are calling it an excellent movie, you will perhaps cheat Sushant once again. He deserves the truth, at least once in life. Will miss you, Sushant.
My rating 5 out of 10 ( Originally 3, but I added extra 2 for SSR)
