Current Affairs                  30th June, 2024

Day

  • 30th June is observed as the Hul Diwas.
    • The Santhal Hul of 1855 was a significant revolt against imperialism, led by the Murmu brothers—Sidho, Kanho, Chand, and Bhairav—alongside their sisters, Phulo and Jhano. This uprising is recognized as one of the earliest peasant revolts against British colonial oppression. The Santhals also resisted upper caste groups, zamindars, darogas, and moneylenders, collectively referred to as ‘diku,’ to protect their economic, cultural, and religious way of life.
    • In 1832, designated areas known as ‘Santhal Pargana’ or ‘Damin-i-Koh,’ now encompassing Sahibganj, Godda, Dumka, Deoghar, Pakur, and parts of Jamtara in Jharkhand, were established for the Santhals. Though they were promised settlement and agricultural opportunities, they instead faced repressive practices such as land-grabbing and bonded labor, known locally as Kamioti and Harwahi. These exploitative conditions fueled their determination to fight back against the oppressive regime.
    • Under the leadership of the Murmu brothers, around 60,000 Santhals engaged in guerrilla warfare against the East India Company for nearly six months. Despite their valiant efforts, the rebellion was eventually crushed on January 3, 1856. The British executed Sidhu in August 1855, followed by Kanhu in February 1856, marking a brutal end to the Santhal Hul.
    • Effect of the Santhal Uprising:
      • The Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act of 1876 (SPT Act), enacted by the British, was a direct outcome of the Santhal Hul. This Act prohibits the transfer of Adivasi lands, both urban and rural, to non-Adivasis. By ensuring that land can only be inherited, the Act preserves the Santhals’ rights to self-govern and maintain control over their land.
      • Similarly, the Chhotanagpur Tenancy Act (CNT Act) of 1908, also enacted by the British, emerged from the Birsa Movement. This Act allows land transfers within the same caste and specific geographical areas but only with the approval of the District Collector. This restriction aims to protect the sale and transfer of Adivasi and Dalit land, ensuring that these communities retain their land ownership and heritage.
      • Together, these Acts reflect the efforts to safeguard the rights and lands of indigenous communities in the face of colonial and external pressures, maintaining their cultural and economic autonomy.
  • June 30 is also observed as the World Asteroid Day.
