  • On 25th February, India celebrates its 77th Raising Day of the Defence Security Corps. It was raised in 1947 as ‘Defence Department Constabulary’ and since then, have been providing security to various sensitive civil and defence installations of the country.
  • Justice N.V Anjaria has been appointed as the 34th Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. His oath has been administered by the Governor of the state Thaawar Chand Gehlot.
  • President Draupadi Murmu has appointed A S Rajeev as the  new Vigilance Commissioner in the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC). Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) is an independent and autonomous body with one Central Vigilance Commissioner and two Vigilance Commissioners that doesn’t come under any ministry or Parliament. It was set up on the recommendation of the Committee on Prevention of Corruption under the chairmanship of K. Shanthanam in 1964.
  • Karnataka Cricketer Hoysala K Passes away due to Cardiac Arrest on February 23 following a match against Tamil Nadu at the age of 34.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the longest cable-stayed bridge of India (2.32 KM), ‘Sudarshan Setu’ in Gujarat’s Devbhumi Dwarka that connects the Beyt Dwarka island to mainland Okha.
    • It is a four land cable stayed bridge built at a cost of ₹979 cr. that has a unique design featuring a footpath adorned with verses from Srimad Bhagavad Gita and the images of Lord Krishna on both the sides.
    • Beyt Dwarka is an island near the Okha Port,  – 30 km away from the Dwarka Town – where the Dwarkadhish Temple of Lord Krishna is located.
  • Inspired by the success of the  ‘International Purple Fest 2024’, held at Goa, President Draupadi Murmu will inaugurate a one day ‘Purple Fest’ in Amrit Udyan, New Delhi. It is being organised by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to inaugurate the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) Mangalagiri with 960 beds and 125 medical seats built under Rs. 1618 Crore in Andhra Pradesh.

  • PM Narendra Modi has announced World’s Largest Grain Storage Plan in Cooperative Sector that will facilitate the setting up of thousands of warehouses and godowns all over the country enabling the farmers to store their produce and sell it at the right time according to their own needs as well as helping to avail loans from the banks.
  • NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC – REL.) has inaugurated its first solar project in Rajasthan at Chhattargarh with 150 MW Capacity. It can generate 370 million units of energy per year – sufficient for 60,000 households saving approximate 3 lakh tons of CO2 emission per year.
  • SJVN Ltd. , a Mini Ratna CPSE under the Ministry of Power has begun the successful commercial operation of its 50 MW  Gujrai Solar Power Station in Kanpur Dehat, Uttarpradesh.
  • According to a MoU signed between the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) and the IIM, India’s first Gati Shakti Research Chair is going to be established at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong. It will contribute towards high end research on multimodal logistics with a focus on North-East.
  • Philippines becomes the first Asian country and the 38th country world-wide to ratify the ILO (International Labour Organisation) Convention No. 190 on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work.
  • India’s first Women Pitch Curator Jacintha Kalyan, associated with Karnataka State Cricket Association  since 1994, is going to oversee the Bengaluru leg of the Women’s Premier League starting at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
  • Suhas Yathiraj, Krishna Nagal and Pramod Bhagat has won Gold medals  in Men’s Singles at the World Para Badminton Championship.

Obituaries

  • Gazhal Singer Pankaj Udhas, renowned for his “Chitt Ayee Hai” and “Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein” has passed away. He was conferred the Padma Shri in 2006.
  • Famous Filmmaker and specially popular for Parallel Cinema Movement in India, Kumar Sahani has passed away at the age of 83 in Kolkata. His famous works are  Maya Darpan (1972), Tarang ( 1984) and Kasba (1990).
  • Hollywood Actor Kenneth Mitchell, best known for his roles in “Captain Marvel” and “Star Trek: Discovery” has passed away after a prolonged suffering from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).

Awards

  • Dr. Aditi Sen De, a physicist with the Harishchandra Research Institute, Prayagraj becomes the first women to be conferred the GD Birla Award for Scientific Excellence 2023. This award is given annually by the KK Birla Foundation since 1991 as a recognition of the outstanding contributions by an Indian scientist who is under 50 and also working. Earlier she was also awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 2018.
  • Ashok Veeraraghavan an alumnus of the IIT Madras has won Texas’ top prestigious Edith and Peter O’Donnell Engineering Award  for his revolutionary imaging technology that intends to make the invisible visible.

State News

  • After a long delay, Sikkim finally gets its first Railway connection as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone for Sikkim’s first Railway station in Rangpo.Sikkim is the only state that doesn’t have a railway connection.
    • The Project is Part of the 45 km Sevoke-Rangpo Railway Line , that will connect Sevoke of West Bengal to Rangpo in Sikkim by means of Railway line. This three phased project is to be implemented in three parts. The first phase will connect Sevoke to Rangpo, the Second part will connect Rangpo to Gangtok and the third phase will connect Gangtok to Nathula.
  • As a first of its kind initiative in the country, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has inaugurated the ‘Savera’ programme – in association with the Medanta Foundation – that seeks to leverage the assistance of the visually impaired women for breast cancer screening. This is because the presence of their extra sense, visually impaired people can detect breast cancer up to half a centimetre while a normal doctor can detect it up to one centimetre, after examination.
  • The Uttar  Pradesh Forest Department is going to set up its first Turtle Conservation Reserve in  the Saryu River, a tributary of Ghaghra, at Gonda District. Saryu is the only river in the country that has the presence of 9 turtle species in it, and among which 8 are included in the Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister in Presence of the Army Chief Manoj Pande, has inaugurated South Asia’s Largest Missile and Ammunition Complex , developed by the Adani Defence & Aerospce in Kanpur.

National News

  • During his recent visit to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated three new facilities for ISRO:
    • PSLV Integration Facility (PIF) at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhrapradesh.
    • A Semi-Cryogenics Integrated Engine and Stage Test (SIET) at ISRO Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri, Odisha.
    • Trisonic Wind Tunnel at VSSC. Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
  • The Prime Minister has also announced the names of the four IAF Pilots as astronaut designates for the upcoming Gaganyaan Mission. They are Group Captain Prashant Balakrishnan Nair, Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap and Wing Commander Subhanshu Shukla. The final crew of three members will be picked from the four.
  • As per the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 brokered by the World Bank and signed between Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan PM Ayub Khan, India completely stops the flow of the Ravi River to Pakistan following the completion of the Shahpur Kandi Barrage, situated in the Pathankot district along the Border of J&K and Punjab, downstream from the existing Ranjit Sagar Dam. It will be utilised for power generation and irrigation in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.
    • According to the Indus Water Treaty 1960, Pakistan will have the access to the three Western rivers : Indus, Jhelum and Chenab , while India will be destined to the waters of Ravi, Beas and Satluj.

  • Indian Squash Player Abhay Singh from Chennai has won the Goodfellow Classic PSA Challenger Tour as his 8th PSA World Title in Toronto, Canada. Goodfellow Classic is a prestigious Squash Tournament event on the PSA (Professional Squash Association ) Challenger Tour.

  • United Arab Emirates along with Barbados, Gibraltar and Uganda has been removed from the Grey List of the FATF ( Financial Action Task Force). And Kenya and Namibia were placed on it.
    • FATF (Financial Action Task Force) is a Paris Based intergovernmental policy making and standard setting body established by the G7 Nations in 1998, dedicated to combat money laundering and terror funding.
    • India became a member of the FATF in 2010.
  • The 13th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organisation is going to be organised at Abu Dhabi in UAE from 26th to 29th February. It is the highest decision maki9ng body of the WTO and it meets once in every two years.

  • Former Supreme Court Judge A.M. Khanwilkar got appointed as the Lokpal of India. Justice Pradip Kumar Mohanty was till now acting in the post.
    • Lokpal is a statutory body devoid of any constitutional status set up by The Lokpal and Lokayukta Act, 2013 having a multi-member body consisting one chairperson and a maximum of 8 members. This body performs the functions of an “ombudsmanand inquire into allegations of corruptions against public functionaries.

State News

  • Uttarakhand is going to be the third state in the country after Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, to enact Anti Rioters Bill. The Uttarakhand Public and Private Property Damage Recovery Bill will aim to make rioters financially liable for losses resulting from protests and strikes in the state.

National News

  • World’s First Vedic Clock according to the ancient and traditional Hindu Panchang, has been installed atop an 85 foot tower in Jantar Mantar of Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh.
    • This unique clock tower will feature information related to Vedic Hindu Panchang, planetary positions, Muhurat, astronomical calculations, predictions along side IST and GMT.
    • The calculation time is based on the time of one sunrise to the next. An hour is of 48 minutes and total day would be of 30 such hours.
    • Ujjain is considered the centre of time calculation in India and also the Tropic of Cancer passes through this city.
  • During his recent visit to Kerala, Prime Minister Narendra Modi  has laid the foundation stone of ISRO’s new space launch-station, the Kulasekarapattinam spaceport in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district. A ₹986 CR fund has been earmarked for the project.
    • This launch station will mainly facilitate the launches of various SSLVs (Small Satellite Launch Vehicles) at a rate of 24 launches per year.
  • PM Narendra Modi has launched country’s first indigenous green hydrogen fuel cell inland waterway vessel at the Cochin Shipyard Ltd. under the Harit Nayuka initiative. The boat having zero noise and zero pollution is another addition to India’s commitment of achieving newt zero carbon emission by 2070.
  • The Prime Minister also laid the foundation of a project building the V.O. Chidambaranar Port as India’s first Green Hydrogen Hub Port.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has released the 16th Instalment of the PM KISAN Scheme of ₹21000 Cr in a public meeting in Maharashtra.
    • PM KISAN Scheme:
      • Full Name: Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM – KISAN) scheme.
      • A Central Secttor Scheme having 100% funding from the GoI under the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
      • Launched in 2018.
      • Under this scheme all land holding farmers will be provided ₹6000 per year in three instalments through DBT.
  • Reliance Foundation has set up a unique animal rescue and rehabilitation centre  for injured, abused and endangered animals at Gujarat’s Jamnagar, named “Vantara”.
  • Jammu & Kashmir is all set to host the annual “Tawi Festival” by the banks of River Ravi from 1ST March to 4th March.
  • Oil India Limited (OIL), India’s oldest oil and natural gas exploration and production company , has hosted its first ever global partner road show, “Confluence: Where Energy and Opportunity Converge” in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Thus it is aiming to achieve growth on a global scale and expand its international presence.

  • Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has launched the SWAYAM Portal to facilitate collaborative courses to the students developed by industry players such as Microsoft, L&T and CISCO. This portal will be operated by IIT Madras. This initiative is help the students better understand and engulf the applicability of their theoretical knowledge.

  • The Union Cabinet of India has approved of setting up the Headquarter of International Big Cats Alliance in India with a budgetary allocation of Rs.150Cr for a period of 5 years.
    • Big Cats: 7 Feline Species – Jaguar, Puma, Leopard, Lion, Tiger, Cheetah, Snow Leopard – are together called the Big Cats.
    • On 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called for an international organisation to stop poaching of the Big Cats in 96 countries where they are found. Currently 16 out of these 96 countries are members of the International Big Cats Alliance.
    • Out of these 7 cats, 5 are found in India except the Puma and the Jaguar.
  • Reports on Status of Leopards in India 2022 was released by the Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav.
    • Key Findings:
      • India’s Leopard population is expected at 13,874 with a 1.08% per annum growth.
      • The Largest growth rate was found in the Central India and the Eastern Ghats of 1.5%.
      • Madhya Pradesh houses the largest population of the leopards in the country – 3907, followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
      • Tiger Reserves with the highest Leopard population are – Nagarjunsagar Srisailam TR (Andhra Pradesh) followed by Panna TR (Madhya Pradesh) and Satpura TR (Madhya Pradesh).
  • Union Minister for Cooperation, Amit Shah has lunched the National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation (NUCFDC) as an umbrella organisation for the Urban Cooperative Banks to modernise and strengthen the Urban Cooperative Banking Sector in New Delhi.
    • NUCFDC will function as a Non-Banking Finance Company operating as a self-regulatory organisation.
  • Ministry of Women and Child Development has celebrated the “Poshan Utsav : Celebrating Nutrition” in New Delhi. In the presence of Minister Smriti Irani and Bill Gates, the event witnessed the launch of the “Poshan Utsav Book” a comic book advocating the importance of nutrition in women and children as part of a MoU b/w the Ministry and Amar Chitra Katha.
  • Minister of Minority Affairs, Smriti Irani has launched the revamped Jiyo Parsi Programme at New Delhi where a MoU was signed to develop ‘the Centre for Avesta-Pahlavi Studies at the University of Mumbai’.
    • Jiyo Parsi is a central sector scheme launched in 2013-14  to arrest the population decline of the Parsi Community.
    • Avesta  – Pahlavi is the ancient and sacred language of the Parsi community.
  • 9th SHAKTI International Women Entrepreneurs Summit is going to be hosted in New Delhi on the occasion of International Women’s Day to promote entrepreneurship among the women.

  • NITI Aayog is going to launch the National Birth Defect Awareness Month 2024 on 3rd March, Birth Defect Day, as an initiative in raising awareness for all birth defects and improve the treatment for child care.
  • Zoological Survey of India  has discovered an all new species of head-shield sea slug with ruby red spot off the coast of West Bengal and Odisha. It has been named after the President of India – Melanochlamys droupadi.

  • Prime Minister Nrendra Modi has launched multiple development projects in West Bengal worth over ₹7200 cr:
    • He inaugurated the 518 km Haldia-Barauni Crude Oil Pipeline of Indian Oil .
