1. Jawaharlal Nehru (1889–1964)

- Only person to serve as acting PM twice (after Nehru and after Shastri). Not a separately numbered “substantive” PM in many official lists.

- He served as the interim Prime Minister twice, but because he was never formally elected to a full term in that office, he is not counted numerically in the official sequence of prime ministers.
3. Lal Bahadur Shastri (1904–1966)
- Born: 2 October 1904, Mughalsarai (now Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar), UP. Shares birthday with Gandhi. Nickname: Nanhe.
- Died: 11 January 1966, Tashkent (heart attack) — only PM to die abroad while in office, a day after the Tashkent Declaration.
- The original name of Lal Bahadur Shastri was Lal Bahadur Varma.

7. Rajiv Gandhi (1944–1991)

- Profession before politics: Indian Airlines pilot. Educated at Doon School; Trinity College, Cambridge (did not complete a degree).
