Very often I am asked by my followers to share with them the lists of movies I would recommend to the movie buffs. Having watched thousands of movies of different genres, it is not possible to recommend just one list of good movies. Therefore, I have thought of publishing such lists every now and then. Each list will have five movies of my choice. This will help you to create your own watchlist. This is the first list of my recommended movies. To maintain a nice blending of genres, I have mixed different genres in a single list. Further, as all these movies are good, I have not maintained a specific order of preference.
Glory- (1989) Directed by Edward Zwick, Glory will always find a spot in the list of my favorite movies of all time. This period drama based on American Civil War is now considered a classic movie in its own right. Denzel Washington won an Oscar for his brilliant performance as Pvt. Trip. Morgan Freeman and Mathew Broderick also delivered mesmerizing performances. This is a classy movie of leadership, sacrifice, and everlasting human values. Very much in sync with the style of movie-making Zwick is known for, this is a tale of courage, determination, and inspiration. It bagged three Oscars and numerous other awards. Watch it if you have not watched it yet. Watch it again even if you have watched it.
- Get Out (2017)- It may appear a bit weird to place Get Out immediately after Glory. But as I already mentioned, these lists will bevery carefully curated to offer a perfect blending of several genres in your platter. If you love psychological thrillers, Get Out is tailor made for you. If you are into horror movies, Get Out is a must watch for you. Intense, shocking and weird, this edge of the seat movie is the one you need to watch now without wasting a single moment. You will be hooked till the last scene and you may even lose your sleep tonight.
- The Best Offer (2013)- Originally titled as La migiliore offerta, this French movie is a hidden gem missed by the most movie buffs. It has an immensely powerful cast with Geoffrey Rush leading the show. He is well supported by the likes of Donald Sutherland, Jim Sturgess and Sylvia Hoeks in a strange role. The USP of this brilliantly crafted movie by Giuseppe Tornatore is its strange twists which will keep you glues to the screen in awe. I was so much taken aback by the surprises, I could barely stop thinking about the movie even hours after I ended watching it. It is a must watch if you love crime movies.
- Ex Machina (2014)- I literally fell in love with Alicia Vikander after this movie. This is a class of its own. This is one of the most brilliant, thought-provoking sci-fi movies ever released in Hollywood. Do not expect Avengers like Superheroes. Do not wait for Dinosaurs to play around. This is about real brain. This is a modern-day Frankenstein. This is what future beholds if we start playing with the machines. The movie develops in a slow pace, creates a chilling ambience and once the ground is ready, it just gives a bang. If you are a sci-fi fan with an inclination to psychological thrillers, this is your movie. Do watch it. It’s one of its own kind movie which must not be missed.
- The Book Thief (2013)- This is not just another World War movie. This is pure love. This is thinking Hollywood at its best. Even though it was snubbed at the Oscars, it won hearts of true movie lovers. Captivating and extremely powerful and high on emotional values, this film is hauntingly beautiful. Sophie Nelisse as Liesel Meminger is perfect. Geoffrey Rush as Hans Hubermann is a class as always. Emily Watson as Hubermann’s wife is delightful. This movie is unique in its attempt to portray an aspect of Nazi brutality not highlighted in many Hollywood movies. Many people may complain about its pace in the initial hour. But I found that completely justified to set the stage for what was to come. Miss it at your own risk. To be continued…
