Ans Stray Dog ‘Menace’ Terrorizes the Town
Staff Reporter, ABC, August 16: Thinking of an early morning walk through the calm and quiet streets of the town? Well, you may have to think twice. The so called ‘stray dog menace’ may turn your pleasant walk into a nightmare. The town has practically been hounded by the stray dogs. With uncontrolled birth rate among such dogs, the ‘menace’ now is at its peak. Seeing a dog going berserk and chasing the commuters and often biting them has now become a common scenario. Mostly such dogs remain in packs, dominate a certain area and people mostly strangers in that locality are often chased and attacked by such dogs. Very often such bites from rabid dogs lead to the spread of diseases. It is worth mentioning that India alone accounts for nearly 35% of rabies deaths in the whole world. This town is also not free from such unfortunate incidents. A child recently beaten by a rabid dog succumbed to death due to lack of proper and timely treatment. A data published by a local NGO working on this issue shows that the incidents of dog bites have increased at least 50 % in the last couple of years. When contacted over phone, the municipality chairman trivialized the issue and remarked, “This happens everywhere. Nothing to worry about.”
But the citizens are worried. The animal lovers are worried. The town is unsafe. The situation urgently calls for empathetic reaction from the authorities, not such nonchalance. Reward for adoption of stray dogs is an excellent idea. Sterilization of the female dogs is something needs to be done immediately. Animal shelters in Public Private Partnership model can be followed as well. Abuse and abandonment of pet dogs must be dealt with stringent punitive steps. But will the authorities wake up from the slumber before it is too late? The howling continues.
