  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh has launched Doctor on Wheels Ambulence in Udhampur,  Jammu.
  • The second International AYUSH Conference and Exhibition has been inaugurated in Dubai World Trade Centre, organised by the Science India Forum and the Ministry of AYUSH.

  • The Researchers of the Kerala University has developed  a nano-powder with water purification capability that uses only sunlight to power itself.
  • The Maldives Govt has asked India to withdraw its troops from the atoll with in March 15. Reportedly there are 88 soldiers (technicians) posted in the archipelago to help them operate the Dornier Aircraft and two Chinook Helicopters for various operations.
  • The Real Madrid has emerged victorious against Barcelona in the Spanish Super League that took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

  • Vice Admiral AN Pramod has been appointed as the Director General of the Naval Operations.
  • The world-famous 76th  Dhanuyatra Festival has begun in Bargarh, Odisha. It is considered to be world’s largest open air theatrical festival that mainly showcases Krishna Leela and Independence of India and basically portrays victory of good over evil.
    • The Department  Culture of the Government of India has conferred the status of National Festival status to Dhanu Jatra in 2014.
  • The Indian Navy and the Royal Thai Navy has jointly conducted the first bilateral naval exercise between the two country in the city of Ayutthaya in Thailand. From Indian side the INS Kulish and IN LCU 56 had took part and the RTN was represented HTMS Prachuap Kiri Khan.
  • The Government of India has invited nominations for the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2024. The announcement of the winners will be done on 11th May, National Technology Day. And the award distribution ceremony will be held on 23rd August, National Space Day (Celebrated 2023 onwards commemorating the touch down of Chandrayaan 3 on the Lunar Surface).
    • In all 56 awards will be given away in 13 domains under 4 categories:
      • Vigyan Ratna – lifetime Achievement in Science and Technology.
      • Vigyan Shri – Notable contribution in science and technology.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tribute to the legendary Tamil Sangam poet Thiruvaluvar on the occasion of ‘Thiruvalluvar Day’ during Pongal.
    • Thiruvalluvar is a noted Tamil Sangam peot belonging to 3rd Century BC. His most famous work is Thirukkural or Kural, a social anthology of the contemporary period.
  • First Human Trial of the Nipah Virus Vaccine ChAdOx1 NipahB , will be conducted by the Oxford Vaccine Group. Nipah is a deadly virus, its vector is fruit bats. This was first discovered in the years of 1998, 1999 in Singapore and Malaysian domestic pigs. The name Nipah has been after a Malayasian village.
    • WHO has enlisted Nipah Virus Disease in its ‘Priority Disease List’.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the new campus of National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN) in Andhra Pradesh.
    • NACIN is the apex institution of the Government of India for capacity building in the field of Indirect Taxation (Customs, Central Excise and GST) and Narcotics Control Administration.
  • NITI Ayog’s National Multidimensional Poverty Index Report: 24.82 Cr Indians have escaped Multidimensional poverty in the last 9 Years. It shows an overall decline in multidimentional poverty in India from 29.17% in 2013-14 to 11.28% in 2022-23.
    • Multidimensional Poverty index was measured by improvement in health, education, and standard of living that are  represented by 12 SDG aligned indicators.
    • Largest decline in Poverty: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh.
    • Top five poor states: Bihar, Jharkhand, MP, UP and Meghalaya.
  • The Annual Crystal Awards: The Crystal Awards are annually given in the field of culture and art by the World Economic Forum  in Davos, Switzerland for making the world a better place through their notable contribution.
    • Three artists were given the awards for 2024: Architect Diebedo Francis Kere, Actor Michelle Yeoh and Guitarist Nile Rodgers.
  • The Department of Science and Technology has organised the 9thIndia International Science Festival 2023.

  • 19th January:Tripura has celebrated the ‘Kokborok Day’ which is also known as the Tripuri Language Day. “Kok” means language and “borok” means people.
  • Commemorating its Nyshi Tribe’s invaluable contribution in conserving the Hornbills in the Pakke Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh has celebrated the 9thPakke Paga Hornbill Festival.
    • Belonging to the IUCN Red List, the Great Hornbill is the state Bird of Arunachal Pradesh and Kerala.
  • 18th January: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tribute to 10th Sikh Guru – Guru Govind Singh Ji on his parakash utsav. Guru Govind Singh ji was born in 1666 in Patna Sahib, Bihar. He declared Guru Granth Sahib as the sacred book of the Sikhs. In 1699 he introduced the Khalsa panth among the sikh community and also he introduced the ‘5 Ks’ among the Sikhs – Kesh, Kangha, Kripan, Kara and Kachera.
  • After defeating World Chess Champion Ding Liren in the Tata Masters in The Netherlands, Rameshbabu Pragganandha  surpasses Vishwanathan Anand to become India’s number one chess player.
  • Indian wildlife officials have confirmed the first ever sighting of a the rare Tibetan Brown Bear in the High Altitudes of North Sikkim.
  • After defeating number 27 ranked Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan Sumit Nagal becomes the first Indian tennis player in 35 years to defeat any seeded player at the Austrailian Open.
  • Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni has written a new book “An Uncommon Love: The Early Life of Sudha and Narayana Murthy”.
  • According to the World’s Top 10 Most Valuable IT Services Brands Report of Brand Finance 2024, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has emerged as the World’s second most and India’s top most valuable IT company. And HCL has emerges as the fastest growing IT service brand with 15.9% YoY growth.
  • Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar has released the book ‘Fertilising the Future:Bharat’s March Towards Fertilizer Self-Sufficiency’ written by Chemical and Fertilisers minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his visit to the Veerbhadra Temple in Andhra Pradesh, has witnessed the tale of Jatayu visually represented by the traditional puppetry art form of Andhra Pradesh known as Tholu Bommalata.
    • The temple is a 15th century Vijayanagara style temple. The popular puppetries in India are known by different names in different states.

  • Teleangana CM Revanth Reddy has signed an agreement with the World Economic Forum (WEF) for setting up Centre for Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) at Hyderabad.
  • Chattishgarh govt has launched an all new scheme named Mahtari Vandana Yojana 2024, under which an economic assistance of Rs. 1000 every month will be provided to the married women belonging to the families having an annual income of less than Rs. 2.5 lakh.
  • Odisha CM Navin Pattanaik has inaugurated the newly built Jagannath Temple Heritage Corridor around the Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri.
  • India is going to host the year long ‘Ramayan’ festival from Delhi until December 2024. The theme of the programme is “Connecting the world through Ramayana”. Seven neighbouring countries will also take part in the programme.

  • The consecration ceremony of Ram lalla at Ayodhya temple:
    • The ‘Pran Pratistha’ took place during the 84 second mool mahurat, a part of larger ‘Abhijeet muhurta’.
    • Pandit Ganeshwar Shastri Dravid, an astrologer from kasha chose the moment.
    • The new idol was carved from black stone of Karnataka by a Mysuru-based sculptor Arun Yogiraj and it depicts Ram at the age of five.
    • Fifty traditional musical instruments from across the country was part of the ‘mangal dhwani’ which was orchestrated by Yatindra Mishra.
    • The instruments included pakhawaj, flute and dholak from Uttar Pradesh, veena from Karnataka, Algoja from Punjab, Sundari from Maharashtra, Mardala from Odisha, Santoor from Madhya Pradesh, Pung from Manipur, Nagada and Kali from Assam and Tambura from Chattisgarh.
    • 2019 Ayodhya Verdict on 150 years’ disputed case:
  • The 16th century Babri mosque, which many Hindus believe was constructed on the Birth place of Lord Ram’s birthplace, was demolished by kar sevaks on December 6, 1992.
  • The 5 judge Supreme court bench that delivered the historical judgement and settled a 150+ year old Ram Janmabhoomi – Babri Masjid land dispute was consisted of then CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justices DY Chandrachud, SA Bobde, Ashok Bhusan and S Abdul Nazeer. The bence delivered its unanimous verdict in favor of the Ram temple on November 2019.
  • Although they passed the judgment in favor of the construction of the temple, it also ordered an allotment of a 5 acre plot for building a mosque.
  • Exclusive information regarding the Ram mandir:
    • The temple has been constructed in the North Indian traditional Nagara style.
    • Its east-west length is 380 ft and 250 ft width and 161 ft high.
    • It is supported by 392 pillars and has 44 doors.
    • The Black stone used for the construction of the deity of Ram lalla has been brought from Karnataka.
    • Core of the temple – Rajasthan’s Makrana Marble

    • The Ram temple is set to introduce a groundbreaking feature – “Surya Tilak” for the deity of Ram Lalla. This unique feature is planned exclusively for the occasion of Ram Navami – the birth anniversary of Ram – when based on the changing position of the Sun, the sunrays will lit the solar powered brass tilak making it glow. It was developed by the scientists from CSIR and Central Building Research Institute.

  • Pepsico India has named Marketing Chief Jagrut Kotecha as its new CEO.
  • The Reserve Bank of India has named Praveen Achuthan Kutty as DCB Bank MD and CEO.
  • Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar: President Draupadi Murmu will give away The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar Award 2024 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on 22nd January 2024.

  • The Wings India 2024 Awards: Ministry of Civil Aviation of the Government of India has given away the Wings India 2024 awards, the largest civil aviation event in the South East Asia at Begumpet Airport, Hyderabad.
    • Bangalore’s Kempegowda Intl. and Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Intl. airport has been joingtly awarded the best airports of the year award.

  • FIFA President Gianni Infantino has been awarded the International sports personality of the Year in Dubai for his innovation to enrich creativity in the development of the sports.

  • The Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Keralahas presented “Onavillu”, a ceremonial bow that is presented to the deity on the annual occasion of Onam , toAyodhya’s Ram Mandir.
    • Onavillu is made up of the wood obtained from Kadamba and Mehagani trees by the Vilayil Veedu Family. It depicts all the ten avatars of Vishnu – Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha and Kalki.
  • The Largest – 206 ft statue of Dr. BR Ambedkar, named as the Statue of Social Justice  – has been inaugurated by Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy  at Vijayawada.
  • The Ministry of Education, GoI has issued New Guidelines for the Coaching Centres in India in the backdrop of the complains received by the government about the rising cases of student suicides, fire incidents and other grave concerns that aims to check the unregulated mushrooming of private coaching centres.
    • The teachers in the educational institute must have the degrees equivalent to graduation.
    • The coaching centers will be prohibited to issue misleading promises and advertisements.
    • Students below the age of 16 can’t be enrolled and they must complete the secondary school education system.
    • The Coaching centres must have a robust counseling system.
    • The tuition fees must be fair and reasonable and receipts should be made a must.
    • The centres must maintain a minimum space required per student before enrollment.
    • Education being a state/UT subject, these guidelines are to be implemented by the respective state/UT govs.
  • All India Secretaries Conference on Water Vision@2047 is to be held at Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu.
  • The 19th edition of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) is going to be hosted at Uganda’s Kampala. Its theme is “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence”.
    • Non Aligned Movement is a shared forum of 120 Global countries that was established in 1961, Belgrade to uphold an global impartial stance during the cold war period.
  • Japan becomes the fifth country to successfully conduct a soft landing on the Lunar Surface after its SLIM spacecraft touched down near the Shioli crater.
  • Space X launches its Mision AX 3 to the ISS with the very first Turkish astronaut Alper Gezeravci.
  • According to the National Education Policy – 2020, the Government of India has decided to add Farsi (Persian) , Pali and Prakrit in the list of Classical Languages in India.
    • The number of classical languages will add to  6 – Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malyalam, Odia – existing classical languages of India.
    • The criteria for declaring a certain language as ‘classical language’ is that it should possess a literary legacy for 1500 -2000 years.
    • The Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution deals with 6 classical languages and 8 official languages.
  • The 6th Edition of Khelo India Youth Games 2023 will be organized at TamilNadu. The PM will inaugurate it at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai.
    • Mascot: Veera Mangai, Rani Velu Nachiyar – an Indian queen who waged war against the British.
    • The logo represents the figure of Samgam Poet Thiruvalluvar.
  • Global Firepower Rankings 2024: 1st – USA, 2ND – Russia, 3rd – China , 3rd – America.
  • Annual Status of Economic Report 2023 (ASER): led by Pratham Foundation. It is aimed to assess the foundational reading and arithmetic abilities, activities in which the youth of the nation is currently engaged , state of digital awareness and aspiration of the Indian Youth. The ASER report is usually referred to by the GoI while formulating Policies.
    • Target Age: 34,735 rural students aged b/w 14-18 years in 28 districts across 26 states.
    • Findings:
      •  A quarter (26.5%) of overall could not read a class 2 level text book in their regional language. And almost half a student (42.7%)  can’t read sentences in English.
      • Half a students can’t solve basic mathematical problems like division of a 3 digit number by a 1 digit number.
      • Around 89% of those surveyed had a smartphone in their home.
      • The findings point a huge skill deficit among adolescents.
  • Apple Inc. has surpassed Samsung as the top smartphone seller of the world in terms of number of smart-phones sold in a year.
